Unlike cloud-based services like WeTransfer or Google Drive, Shiftdrop never stores your files. The connection is established between browsers directly, making transfers faster on local networks and completely private.

How to Share a File

  1. Open Shiftdrop on the sending device.
  2. Create a room or join an existing room with a room code.
  3. Share the room code with the recipient.
  4. The recipient opens Shiftdrop and enters the room code.
  5. Drag and drop your file or click to select it — the transfer begins immediately.
  6. The recipient downloads the file directly to their device.

How It Works

Shiftdrop uses WebRTC Data Channels to establish a direct encrypted connection between two browsers. A lightweight signaling server is used only to set up the initial connection handshake — once connected, your files flow directly between devices with no server in the middle.

On the same local network, transfers can reach speeds of 50–200 MB/s. Over the internet, speed depends on your upload and the recipient's download connection.
